Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS)

How a Mandibular Advancement Splint works?

Mandibular advancement splints (MAS) are mouth splints worn in the mouth during sleep used for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnoea. These work by advancing the lower jaw to maintain an open airway while sleeping.

What you need to know about MAS

A dentist or orthodontist assesses your suitability for a MAS and determines the most suitable MAS from many different options. Some people may initially experience aching of the jaw muscles and teeth, although this should disappear in a few days. Splints are easy to take care of (can be cleaned with a toothbrush and toothpaste), and most MAS devices may be used for 4-5 years.  MAS may be used by patients with no teeth

Why you need a Sleep Study for  MAS

A sleep study is necessary to assess the severity of snoring and OSA and if a MAS is a suitable treatment option.

How can we help

Sleep Services Australia specialize in portable sleep monitoring, so you can have a low-cost sleep study in the comfort of your own home, at a time that suits you.

You need a referral from your GP or dentist. No waiting list – simply phone our Bookings office on 1300 867 533 to make an appointment at a time and location that suits you. Once you have a sleep study, you will have an initial consultation with your dentist to determine which MAS option is best After you adjust to your MAS device, a follow-up treatment review sleep study should be performed to assess the effectiveness of MAS and sleep studies will need to be performed annually to follow up the ongoing effectiveness of the MAS.

Approximate costs of MAS

The MAS typically start at $1100, depending on the type of MAS prescribed. Many private health insurance funds now offer rebates for oral appliance therapy (waiting periods usually apply), so check with your particular fund before proceeding with treatment.
